Elvstrøm Sails are announcing the launch of a new Cable Free Code Zero for racing and performance cruising yachts. The Cable Free Code Zero has significant performance advantages. Made from Elvstrøm’s EPEX laminate membrane, which is fully guaranteed, it has strengthening yarns in the load lines enabling the sail to be furled, without a heavy cable. It can be flown with significantly less halyard tension than a cabled Code Zero, which enables the sail to project further forwards. This helps create a straighter, (non-flapping) leech and means the sail works across wider sailing angles too. Following a season of testing with the Lady Mariposa Racing Team, on board their Ker 46, it has contributed to their success with overall victory in the 2018 RORC Offshore Points Championships. Team Manager, Dan Hardy gives the sail a big thumbs up, reporting, “The new Cable Free Code Zero is a huge step forwards for these furling sails. Without the heavy cable in the luff, the sail is free to project positively, massively improving the flying shape of the sail. We are finding the Cable Free Code Zero much easier to furl and unfurl compared to our previous sail with a cable. It’s very versatile, with a massive cross-over in our downwind sail wardrobe.” Significantly for both racing and high performance cruising yachts, removing the cable brings many other benefits. It reduces both the additional expense and weight of having a heavy cable on board. The sail is lighter to move around. Plus, storage is easier too as the sail can be packed into a bag without issues of having to snake and store a very stiff cable down below decks. Hardy points out, “The sail is much easier to store in the bag. And also, to get it on and off the foredeck as the furled sail can bend and be flaked much more easily, than with a cable.” Additionally, being able to fly the sail with far less halyard tension than conventionally used to get the pointing angles from a cabled sail has other benefits. This reduces the loads required on your mast, halyard sheaves or the need for reinforced bowsprits and fittings, potentially saving on equipment maintenance and build costs too. A very optimistic opening awaits the shipyard thanks to the launch of a brand new range, as well as two exciting new models. The first revolution will take place with the arrival of the Absolute 60 Fly, a completely new model called “The Absolute Prisma”. A yacht that will redefine the range with new ground-breaking design elements never seen on a Flybridge boat of these dimensions, such as the Owner’s quarter at the bow and the aft cockpit terrace, free from any fixed furniture elements. A new perspective is offered by the bow master cabin – thanks to the Owner’s quarter concept: a cabin that takes up the full beam of the boat, unprecedented on a 60/70-foot yacht. Knowing that the season is rapidly underway, Yachting Partners Malta and Elvstrøm Sails have made a list that you can check twice to get the best out of your season! Mast & headsail furler Check the headsail Furler for damages on the foil, drum, and furling line. Clean the mast and Furler groove from dirt, salt, and small insects. Spray it with silicone free lubricant and clean with a cloth. Do not use grease! Clean and grease threads of turnbuckles, before start trimming the mast. Trim the mast - Conventional mast: Moderate mast curve without tension on backstay. Furling mast: Hardly any mast curve. Have a closer look at the halyards to check if there is any damage or abrasion. Also, it is important to check the function of the shackle. In case of moderate abrasion on the halyard you can cut the splice off and resplice at the end other end of the rope. If the halyard is long enough. Now the bad part of the rope is in front of the clutch/roll or whatever damaged the rope. If mantle is heavily damaged: Buy new. Look at the jammer if the cleats are fine to avoid slippage of the halyard. Check the sheets for abrasion and damage. Sail Check: Check all stitches on the sails. If they are damaged contact your Elvstrøm SailPoint Have a close look at the batten pockets, batten and the pocket latch, luff cars and all other fittings. Look carefully at the sails luff tape and bolt rope, check for damage and abrasion. Check the leech of the sail for damages. If minor marks from spreaders and mast fittings are visible, patch with self-adhesive cloth. If not on board, ask your local Elvstrøm SailPoint. If major marks: contact your local Elvstrøm SailPoint Also have a closer look at the leech line and the cleat / Velcro and check your reefs on the main sail. Unpack your spinnaker and other packed sails and check for small holes or damages. Repack your sails to be ready for hoisting. Repair kit: Bringing a repair kit with e.g., extra patches in the right colour and sizes, extra battens and a batten repair kit, when leaving for a longer tour is a very good idea. We tailor make repair kit to fit your sail inventory and adventure. Just before heading off on a longer summer holiday do check mast with all fittings, bolts and splits again. And do a mast trim after the first miles of the season to be sure it is still OK or needs some fine tuning. Besides rig and sail check, do remember to check the engine (oil/cooling water/impeller/V-belt) of engine, rudder and all other equipment as well and very important do not forget to stock up on necessities either – wine, beer, chocolate, you name it. Style and elegance complete the DNA of this new 44-footer which resumes the family feeling of the other models within the range. The new Grand Soleil 44-footer completes the Performance range dedicated to the sportier owners in search of a boat that offers high performance able to give results in regattas, inserting itself among the Grand Soleil 34, GS 48, and GS 58. Its latest model is a sporty 44-footer that’s offered in performance cruising and racing formats. Both of which benefit from generous interior volumes, with the latter having a taller carbon rig, with a race-optimized deck layout and sail plan. In both cases, cockpit space is significantly improved compared to earlier models. Despite a sleek, low-profile coachroof, the extra space outside is achieved without compromising space below decks. The standard arrangement is for three cabins and two heads, both of which have separate shower stalls. The distinctive features of the boat include the positioning of the mast further to the rear to allow a greater sail area for the bow sails to maximize performance considering the average Mediterranean conditions.
